Throwback Thursday: Cannes Film Festival

The annual Cannes Film Festival is one of the most anticipated events in the fashion industry. With the festival taking place in the middle of May, the French Riviera’s beauty is in full bloom and provides the perfect backdrop for designers and stylists to show off their work on its lauded red carpet. However, just because it’s a film festival doesn’t mean that the crowd is made up solely of movie professionals. Quite the contrary. In fact, as was the case this year, models often steal the show.

The generation before us had Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. Now there is a new cohort emerging. Not yet experienced enough to be called “supermodels,” but very much on their way to attaining such stardom, this famed group, renowned for their use of social media to generate ever-growing fan bases, consists of two standout style icons, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner. From their day-to-day “athleisure” attire to their slinky, sexy looks on red carpets, these young women are emulated in all aspects of their life. And they did not disappoint at Cannes.

Her first time walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, Hadid chose revealing, out-of-the-box looks. While such boldness at the classic French event could have gone terribly wrong, she nailed every look, not seeming out of place one bit. Take a look for yourself!

Instead of wearing solely traditional gowns, Hadid decided to change up her ensembles, donning a striped pantsuit and chainmail Givenchy crop top to the de Grisogono party. However, of all of her looks, the custom red Alexandre Vauthier gown, with a slit so high that it had the paparazzi waiting to catch a glimpse of her unmentionables, held the public’s attention for days following its appearance. According to Hadid’s stylist, the young model was not worried at all about flashing the public, thanks to the gown’s built-in undergarments and the amount of fashion tape that she applied. This fashion moment was only heightened by the debut of Hadid’s new bangs, inspired by fashion icons like Brigitte Bardot and Carla Bruni.

Bella Hadid was not the only younger sister on the Cannes red carpets. (Her older sister, Gigi Hadid, a fellow emerging supermodel, was unfortunately not present at the affairs.) Kendall Jenner, the famous second-youngest in the Kardashian-Jenner clan, demanded a fair share of attention on the carpets herself. Like Hadid, she went for more daring looks that showed off her amazing figure.

Jenner’s silk tulle Cavalli Couture gown for the From the Land of the Moon premiere left little to the imagination, being all but see-through except for the intricately-laced black velvet and gold lurex snakes. In keeping with her penchant for sheer attire, she attended a dinner hosted by jewelry brand Chopard in a diaphanous cream Eli Saab cocktail dress and matching jacket. However, such transparent outfits were not staples of Jenner's wardrobe at first: she walked the Magnum Double red carpet at the beginning of the festivities in an asymmetrical Versace gown, opting to show more leg and cleavage. Although Hadid’s later leg-bearing gown stole the “high slit” show, it was in fact Jenner who first showed off that model asset.
